a surprising new contender has emerged in recent times as a big spender in the international market — Nigeria.
“Africa is growing from strength to strength and particularly in the last 12 to 18 months we’ve seen Nigeria come through incredibly strongly,” explains Sue West, director of operations at up-market London department store Selfridges.
“It is a very broad base so we still very much have a strong Chinese base, a strong Middle East base, Russia is there, the BRICs nations as you imagine, but Nigeria seems to be coming through very strongly at the moment as well,” she adds.

Women are progressively becoming the biggest investors in Kenya’s mid-market real estate with female buyers making up 62% of the purchases at the Casa Mia property development, situated 45 minutes from Nairobi’s CBD. This is evidence of a trend that has seen the buying power of female consumers increasing in Africa.

The African consumer is on the rise. From 2005 to 2008, consumer spending across the continent increased at a compound annual rate of 16%, more than twice the GDP growth rate. The projected 4.5% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) until 2015 translates into a 35% increase in spending power.
